(phando) Blades · Burning Man 2026

Five spinning blades, one hologram.

A 360° kinetic light sculpture. Five 40-inch persistence-of-vision LED blades spin light into video that seems to hang in midair. Every frame comes out of a custom OpenGL rendering and effects pipeline made for this piece, on a two-hour loop.

At night on the playa, two people in work clothes tune five large clear circular blades mounted on a steel frame

01The pipeline

Ordinary video doesn't survive a spinning LED.

A blade only ever draws one line of light at a time, so content has to be made for it. Every piece runs through our own OpenGL rendering and effects pipeline, built for these five fans, from quiet sparkles to full intensity.

02Five as one

Five blades, lined up into one image.

Stand at the end of the row and the five blades stack into one deep picture. Walk around it and it changes. The two-hour loop rewards wandering off and coming back.

03The build

Built in the shop, finished on the playa.

The blades went together in the shop on a steel frame, then out to the desert for Burning Man 2026. It's still a work in progress. When the lights come on, it takes on a whole new life.

What's next

Next, the blades talk back.

Budget willing, the next version gets interactive graphics and real-time experiences, so the sculpture responds to the people standing in front of it.
